As someone who’s going through the process of becoming a citizen, I don’t think about it much. Really, I’m only getting it to make life easier for me travel-wise should I decide to study abroad. Other than that, I try not to think about politics. However, when I found out my friend, who I didn’t even know was illegal, was detained and is facing deportation, of course I became alarmed. Living in today’s world, we have grown accustomed to our own culture. This generation is drawn to the viral–living on Facebook likes, trending Twitter topics, and hit YouTube videos. Here’s one occasion between me and Chandra where a colloquialism causes some confusion:
Erin said the roads are pretty slushy and everyone is driving really slowly.
Slushy?
That’s what she said.

growing up
Being grown up isn’t half as fun as growing up. Often I’ve been told to enjoy it while I can. Life only comes around once, so why take it so seriously? But I don’t think I take life seriously enough. Today I was just in a weird mood. I had this conversation with Chandra while I was thinking about all this:

I feel like I’ve been punched in the gut. Not literally, but in the way it feels like right after a bad break up, and I’m just standing here asking myself what just happened. In the wake of the Arkansas loss, I am an empty shell, not knowing what to think or how to act. Things got really bad, but then maybe there was a chance of everything working out after all, until everything came crashing down at the end. It was heartbreak. (more…)

I’m typing this as I listen to Hog calls on Bourbon Street being live streamed through EarthCam. In some 15 or so hours I’ll be getting ready to watch the Sugar Bowl, which is a nice match-up considering its Tuesday night time slot.
